•  Rajma/kidney beans: 405mg per 100g cooked.

•  Sweet potato: 337mg per 100g.

•  Tomato: 237mg per 100g.

Daily intake of 3,500–4,700mg potassium is the target associated with optimal blood pressure management. Most Indians consuming processed-food-heavy diets fall well short of this.

The India Implications

India is at a critical juncture. The FSSAI has been developing front-of-package labelling rules including high-sodium indicators. Implementation of genuinely informative, consumer-actionable sodium labelling — along the lines of Chile’s black octagonal warning labels rather than traffic-light systems industry manages to make less alarming — would be the most evidence-based single intervention available.

For individuals, the most powerful sodium reduction tool remains avoiding processed foods — packaged snacks, commercial pickles, instant noodles, processed meats.
